Burt
A couple of Gustavs from CP+B created this company to build software specifically for the advertising industry.
Two of their existing applications look pretty awesome. Rich, their refined analytics app and the one I am even more excited about, Copybox. Copybox is what they refer to as "a photoshop for copywriters."
A dynamic text editor with built in reaction variables allows you to create more indepth copy and create new ideas on the fly. Actionscript export lets you implement dynamic copy into flash ads targeted specifically towards users.

crowdsourcing?
ok so there is this new thing, crowdsourcing, this guy John Winsor, previous owner of Radar i think, went to work at CP+B is all about this stuff.
so he left Crispin and started Victors and Spoils. part of me thinks this is a brilliant way to get work done. part of me thinks this is a lazy and inefficient way to get work done for clients who don't know any better.
there are efforts being put in place to systematize (is that even a fucking word?) crowdsourcing for agencies and i am sure we will see much of it pan out in the next few years.
lab rats anyone?

Cloud Computing
Its amazing what a marketing elective will teach you. I took buyer behavior this semester so I could learn more about the way consumers think about products and how advertising is incorporated into that.
Cloud computing is interesting. A combination of outsourcing IT infrastructure and business applications have allowed for a lot more flexibility with business IT departments, letting them focus on better things. These applications are starting to get integrated with social networks and other consumer applications.

putting your pants on every day
jamie barrett told a story about getting up in the morning and asking himself what the hell he was doing at 5am going into work for conference calls.
he said "what the hell am i doing."
from his bed, the voice of his 6 year old son replied "you are putting your pants on."
i myself have been sleeping in my jeans again. i also do not have a 6 year old son.

HADRON COLLIDER!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8371662.stm
14 months of repair after this thing broke on its initial run, the Large Hadron Collider is ready to roll. Very cool stuff. In some ways it is considered the most complex thing man has ever built.

Identity / Stationery Kits
I recently did some logo/identity stuff for a small benefits company. I had to really dig around for some examples of great work and stuff I thought was really cool. I came across this.

Not only is there lots of awesome work posted, but I love the way the forum is set up at QBN.

wonderskate
I have been skating a lot more lately. It's one of those things that I never forget about but don't do so frequently. I think that keeps it from getting old.
One of my best friends just opened up his own shop in Harrisonburg, VA. I'm very excited for him and the whole idea has a great artistic vibe to it. www.wonderskate.com

google has been putting commercials on TV recently. I have not seen this one aired but it is by far my favorite.
Daddy Likes!
I had a notebook the first few years of college and I found it practical, but the idea of using it in place of a regular school notebook / sketchbook / organizer never really felt right. In the midst of apple tablet rumors, Microsoft has gone ahead and fired the first shot. It looks awesome.

Eurotrash
I love how europeans can get away with awesome stuff like this. Came across it on ads of the world while looking for famous flashlight ads.
edit: ads of the world disabled their hotlinking.

Shepard Fairey Interviews Banksy
This is an older interview but I came across it today and there is some very insightful stuff. It's also interesting considering the interviewer happens to be Shepard Fairey, an artist himself. Awesome stuff.
"Every other type of art compared to graffiti is a step down—no two ways about it. If you operate outside of graffiti, you operate at a lower level. Other art has less to offer people, it means less, and it’s weaker. I make normal paintings if I have ideas that are too complex or offensive to go out on the street, but if I ever stopped being a graffiti writer I would be gutted."

Mullins BS logo finalized.
Great packaging idea for paint. The normal spray-painter, if thats even a completely legit entity, doesnt really need to know what pantone they are painting with, but the cans being that active with their colors is just brilliant. I use spray paint more frequently than any other type of paint because of its point and paint capability, although i have qualms about CFCs. The design on these cans would be an automatic sell for me.
The Brand Gap
Started reading this at WORK today. Excellent insight into what comprises a brand and how to 'differentiate, collaborate, innovate, validate and cultivate' brands.
